Business
Volunteers for the Arts (BVA) is an alliance of business professionals
that helps nonprofit arts and culture organizations by providing
them with free management consulting assistance and strengthened
business practices. BVA was established in New York in 1975, and
currently has 15 US affiliates.
In
San Diego, where the program has been active since 1991, 25-30 projects
are completed each year by a pool of over 75 volunteers who have
been recruited and trained as BVAs. Since 1993, San Diego's BVAs
have provided over 5,000 hours of volunteer consulting services
valued at over $1,000,000 to more than 60 arts and culture organizations.
Projection
consultation can be provided through BVA in such diverse areas as
marketing, finance and accounting, strategic planning, human resources,
fundraising, organizational development, governance, legal issues,
and graphic design. The duration of projects range from a
single afternoon consulting session to several months.
All
BVAs are required to complete an application (download
BVA application) and then be interviewed. Qualified applicants
will be asked to complete a 1/2 day Saturday training session before
being eligible for project work.
