THEATRE (DESIGN/TECHNICAL) INSTRUCTOR

POSITION AVAILABLE:
MiraCosta College's Performing Arts Department invites applications for a
dynamic and collaborative designer, mentor, and teacher for a full-time,
tenure-track faculty position beginning on August 16, 2010. Principle
responsibilities include design and/or mentor in a variety of areas (sets,
costumes, lights, properties, sound) for four mainstage productions per
year; teach in a variety of design areas; mentor student design projects;
and work collaboratively to build a new design and technology area within
a very active theatre program. Additional production opportunities may be
possible with The Actor's Academy summer program. The standard work week
for this position is forty (40) hours. The instructional work week
consists of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, including fifteen (15) LHE
(Lecture Hour Equivalent) of instructional assignments with the remaining
hours devoted to curriculum development, preparation and student
evaluation, five (5) hours of student engagement (of which two (2) hours must be
designated office hours), and five (5) hours of departmental activities
and collegial governance. The person selected for this position will be
subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

THEATRE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Theatre discipline at MiraCosta College is committed to artistic
enrichment and appreciation of the theatre arts for all students. The
academic discipline seeks to present opportunities for students 1) to
develop an appreciation for theatre; 2) to improve the knowledge and
skills required to work in the theatre arts professionally and in related
careers; 3) to gain awareness, as participants or audience members, of the
influences of theatre in the world. The mainstage production season is composed of
four stylistically different plays each year. To reflect our multi-cultural
student population, all casting is considered color blind to all who
audition. For further training, The Actor's Academy offers a conservatory
style program that focuses on classical actor training and performing the
works of William Shakespeare. The theatre facilities include a 247-seat
proscenium theatre with many unique features including a vomitorium and
flexible thrust stage and the Little Theatre, a small proscenium space

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
(E = essential job function)
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the
following:

1) Teach design and technical theater, such as set design, costume
design, sound design, lighting design, etc., and/or theatre theory courses
such as Introduction to Theatre and Dramatic Literature. (E)

2) Design and/or mentor students for four mainstage productions, as
well as overall supervision of set and costume shop construction in
collaboration with one full-time staff member. (E)

3) Build new curriculum for the new

design and technology area in collaboration with two acting/directing faculty members. (E)


4) Assist in the creation, development and evaluation of courses both
> online and on-ground, Student Learning Outcomes, certificates, and
programs. (E)

5) Assist in recruiting and promoting the Theatre program by
participating in college-sponsored events and visiting area high schools.

6) Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance. (E)

7) Foster relationships with local community and professional theatre
companies to build internship agreements.

8) Maintain currency in theatre and computer technologies.

9) Develop and foster growth with the vocational education program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of
the following minimum qualifications:

1) a Master's degree in drama/theatre arts/performance; OR

2) a Bachelor's degree in drama/theatre arts/performance and a Master's
degree in comparative literature, English, speech, literature, or
humanities; OR

3) a valid California teaching credential authorizing drama/theatre
arts instruction in a community college; OR

4) the equivalent (view the equivalency instructions and guidelines at

5) sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic,
socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community
college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Master's in Fine Arts degree in Theatre Arts or Drama with an
emphasis in Design and Technology.

2) Postsecondary teaching experience.

3) Professional experience and expertise in theatre design, including
costume, set, props, lighting, and sound design, as well as technical
theatre and construction in more than one area.

4) Academic experience in program and curriculum building, such as
creating new courses, Student Learning Outcomes, and course outlines.

5) Demonstrated ability to work closely and cooperatively with the
variety of artists, technicians, and students involved in the art of the
theatre, music and dance.

6) Evidence of strong interpersonal communication and management
skills. A good sense of humor is a plus.

7) Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise, and mentor students
through design and construction for mainstage productions.

8) Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population representing
a wide range of abilities, ages, nationalities, and cultures.

9) Demonstrated willingness to put in extra time required to make a
program successful.

WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION:
Primarily works in a classroom environment, theatre, office, or
instructional lab; constant contact with students; subject to frequent
interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent
exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; may
work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or
evening hours; occasional local travel may be requested.

PHYSICAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent to frequent standing and walking;
intermittent bending and stooping; occasional light lifting, carrying,
pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 35 pounds or less; ability to
work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or
other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and
off campus as needed to conduct district business.

Offer of Employment:
An offer of employment to the person selected for this position is
contingent upon 1) successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam
at district expense, 2) tuberculosis clearance, 3) proof of eligibility to
work in the United States, and 4) fingerprint clearance.

salary policy and fringe benefits:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the
salary schedule based on education and years of experience. The maximum
initial placement for experience is Step 10. Faculty members are
encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study,
qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
